How to find songs to Nightcore: Beginner method

Post by rsslayersr » June 30th, 2015, 9:50 am

Introduction

Most of us here like Nightcore a lot. You guys that have just started their channel, or are planning on it, were maybe looking for gaining views quick or just speeding up songs that you like but haven't been done before.
If you've been linked to here, you're probably just starting out, which is why I'm writing this short tutorial.

How can I find resources on the fly?

What is Nightcore?

First of all, you should be knowledged a bit about what Nightcore is and what role it plays in this tutorial.
- http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/nightcore

To really abbreviate the meaning of Nightcore, I can say that Nightcore is a Dance/Trance/Techno thing, so it's weird to do it with songs not from that sound spectrum. Most importantly, the upload has to feel close to the original Nightcore songs too if you want to lable them as Nightcore. Which means it should sound like Happy Hardcore or UK Hardcore

a playlist with the original Nightcore group uploads: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... YEpF8hQyWW

A typical Nightcore song, right kind of music sped up

A typical non-Nightcore song, wrong kind of music sped up
So now we have that out of the way, let's begin with the next question.

What to search for?

Can you use every song made, speed it up and just lable it Nightcore? You can, but we here in our community wouldn't appreciate it as Nightcore then. You need songs that sounds a bit like Happy Hardcore or UK Hardcore when sped up, almost like rave music. But finding them is easier said than done, which is probably why you are here.

If you're just beginning, I would suggest looking into just a few kinds of Music Genres: Eurodance and Hands Up.
There's a whole list of genres you can explore in this thread, but I wouldn't look into it if you're just starting out:
- http://nightcoreuniverse.net/viewtopic. ... 900#p26313

It's easy to get confused on how Nightcore channels can keep up and upload once a week. Bigger channels have been around and know the ins and outs of gathering artists, album releases and channels to follow. Some even have a folder full of usable songs ready to use when they like.

Beginners can't be expected to know all that.

Beginner search method

Go on Youtube, and type in Hands Up or Eurodance mix. These videos offer lots of tracks you can listen to and hopefully the mixer has added a tracklist in the description. The tracklist is very important, you need to know what the names of the artists and of the songs are. It might help if you change the search filter to this week or this month, for other reasons.

Now open a mix and listen to a few tracks. Do you like some of them? Use the description to search for that song specificly.
I myself like to know if someone else has made a Nightcore version already. If you upload an already nightcored song, you might steal some views of that other channel. It might only be worth it if it's a different remix or that the quality is horrible of the original one.

Simply copy and paste the track in the search bar:
artist - song title (remixer and kind of remix)

To search for Nightcore versions, I like to add Nightcore at the end, and maybe delete the artist part:
song title (remixer and kind of remix) nightcore

That should give a broad view on if that particular song has been done.

Repeat this process for all the songs you like. Check other mixes as well if you couldn't find any usable songs. Leave a couple tracks open to save or for other just starting channels to pick up. It wouldn't be fair if you uploaded everything you could find like you were a machine..

You can try to buy these songs on iTunes, Amazon and beatport, or try to download them from more.. Free-minded download sites.

If you want to be absolutely sure that a song hasn't been done before you can check the thread below
- http://www.nightcoreuniverse.net/viewto ... =17&t=4803
Ctrl+f and search for your chosen song. Zurd might've picked up a song hard to find, since it could've been labled incorrectly.

This tutorial does not include the technical of HOW to nightcore a song. This can be found in both the below topics.

How can I find images?

One of the biggest friends to Nightcore channels probably has been http://www.konachan.net
This site offers loads of images of anime-esque characters you've encountered before. There's a trick on using that site correctly however.

Many people care about the quality and pixels of the images. People especially don't want black bars at the sides of their videos. What you also don't want is stretching out images so they look inflated.

It depends on how well you know your video editor. There should be options that make it so the image is perfectly alligned to a 16:9 configurations. 720p or 1080p translates to 16:9. Try finding images that have pixels like 1280x720 or 1920x 1080.

Tags on konachan like Headphones, hatsune_miku or other popular characters might deliver you some nice images to use. Experiment on Konachan. The advanced settings might prove very useful when you're familliar with them.

The more videos you create, the more you can develop your own style, so don't give up too quick. Views and subscribers can only come when you yourself are happy with your uploads.

This concludes my tutorial. I hope you can find some use for it.

To add to what slayer said about Konachan, ensure you only use "Konachan.NET" and not ".COM" otherwise you'll be bombarded with hentai. In addition to this you can use the Advanced Search methods to select "Safe" and/or "Questionable" images only.

Also a good way to get tracks is when you buy CD-Compilations (or download them) which are containing the Genre (HandsUp, Eurodance, Trance, maybe some Hardcore) you want to nightcore.
There are very often tracks on it which, are unknow or nor released as single yet.
Also you are able to find very much not nightcored tracks on them.

I would suggest searching for those compilations when you're starting to be at an intermediate level of running your channel. Feel free to post more methods you guys care to share (without posting your secrets of course).

As for beginners, take it easy. You pick up finding songs soon enough if you keep at it.

I might use some songs from the Clubland albums (all before 16), but I can see some of them being blocked in some countries..
I feel the need to leave my world, to discover some other place.

Did a quick search in the nightcore general found the previous thread about how to find songs

Places to find good Nightcore-able songs?
http://nightcoreuniverse.net/viewtopic. ... 206#p27206
emilemil1 wrote:Everyone does it differently, so I'll just give you my approach. (writing on phone, may be typos)

1. Find producers and record labels by looking at already existing Nightcore that you like.
2. Check the discographies of those producers, and also note down any others producers they've worked with, as well as previous record labels they've released tracks on.
3. Do the same thing for the discographies of the labels you've found.
4. You can follow the artists and labels on Facebook and Soundcloud and maybe find free bootlegs. Checking the people who've commented, liked and followed can lead to other producers you may also like.

Keep doing this and you will eventually find pretty much everything there is to find.
