I download my songs straight from Youtube, I have this handy-dandy Google Chrome extension which lets me click on a button and then instantly downloads a Youtube video as an MP3 file, and then I use Audacity for the Nghtcoring...

Note that, you'll need the FFMPEG library files for Audacity to do the following.

You guys realize that you're definitely losing audio quality by converting an already lossy codec to MP3, right?

The highest-quality way to rip a song from YouTube is to download the 720p or larger WebM version, then use MKVtoolnix to put the audio stream (Vorbis) into an MKA. From there, you can open the file in Audacity.

If even that's too hard for you, just download the 720p or larger MP4 version, and open that directly in Audacity.

And remember to ALWAYS save ANY audio edits in at least a 24bit lossless format! (and if you're really picky, you could even upload to YouTube 24bit FLAC)

I'd like to point out here that I was experimenting some time ago with this method, and I think (and know) that it's much easier and better to just Press Effect --> Change Speed, changing speed increases the pitch AND Tempo simultaneously, it saves you some time, BUT the most important, it makes the sound MUCH MUCH cleaner than first changing the pitch and then the tempo, you can try it out yourself ;)

Well dang it man, when I mentioned my "lossless" method, I didn't even realize the instructions on the front page didn't say to use 'Change speed', especially since that's what I used to compare the audio quality to my method!

Just a quick tutorial on how to speed up songs in Pro Tools (if you somehow have access to it (I really, really don't suggest buying it just for making Nightcore)).

This method is probably up the more advanced end of the spectrum.

1. Import song and drag it into a new track
2. Go to AudioSuite > Pitch Shift > Time Shift
3. In the Audio section set Mode to Varispeed (So you are changing both Tempo and Pitch at the same time)
4. Either set it to a desired tempo in the processed section (you may have needed to identified a beat first), Adjust the speed by increasing the percentage (you might want to play around with this a bit) or if you know how many semi-tones you want to increase the pitch by just Transpose it under pitch.
5. Hit Render (It won't change it until you do so)
The way that Pro Tools handles tempo and pitch means that very little to no quality is lost when it is rendered meaning that you can safely change the tempo and re-render until you've found a speed you like

If you're done there simply go File > Bounce to > Disk... and save it. Otherwise feel free to play with the inserts in the track a bit.

Pretty much the benefit of Pro tools is the way that it handles tempo and pitch and the final output quality (Unless you break something, it's going to be the same as input).

I presume that method is essentially the same as the "Set Rate" function in Audacity? As I stated earlier, that is also lossless (assuming you're not importing with lossy formats), but the method was shot down with essentially "nobody pays attention to the quality anyway, they'll end up doing it however regardless"

Audacity however is even available on Linux and also has portable Windows versions available via PortableApps.

Basically either program will work, so it's your choice. The important part is the process you take nightcore-ing a song, not so much the program you use.

HOWEVER, the guide for Audacity IS a bit outdated - it does not mention the "Change Speed" function, which will simplify the process to one step and preserve quality better.

I have Nightcored a song using Audacity, due to it being available for Linux while WavePad is for Windows only.

I have Nightcored it and it sounds the same as one on the YouTube, but the Quality is much worse.
I have downloaded the HQ song, so that cannot be the issue.

Can you tell me why does my Nightcored song have such a bad Quality?
Is it because of Audacity?

I haven't saved the Nightcored one, just increased some settings, do I need to save it and choose the HQ option? Is there such a thing in the first place?

File > Export > Now I have to pick on how I'll save the File. Randomly, it is put under WAV (Microsoft), which is for Windows, I use Linux.

Should I save them under MP3 Files?
Also, I do not see any option for me to be able to save in a different Quality/Definition.

What should I do and where can I find the changing, do you know?

I haven't used wavepad for quite some time, but i remember that when you save the file it will give you some several quality options(mhz and kbps) and to choose between mono/stereo.
Try using 320 kbps and stereo with mp3.
Also: video editors might ruin the quality as well so make sure you choose the best options there as well too.

I used Audacity.

I saved it under "MP3 File", but the Quality is still really bad.

Know any other Editors like WavePad that are also accessable by Linux?

But there still is that annoying scratching and low-quality. :/

Must be the bad Editor that ruins the sound... thanks again on helping!

I just have one more question since we are up on this topic, what is the difference between Stereo and Joint Stereo?

I'm not sure if Virtual DJ works on Linux, but if it does, you should use it since it gets a really good quality, however, it takes a while to record the song.

Are you still accepting help with Audacity? I'm quite the audiophile and use Audacity as my only editing tool, so I know it quite well.

First off, the guide in the first post for Audacity is outdated - it does not mention the "Change Speed" function under the 'Effect' menu. This will "nightcore" a song in a single step and will preserve quality better.

Secondly, when you are testing and adjusting how must you should speed up the song, be sure you undo and/or start from the beginning each time. This is because every edit you do is layered on top of the last edit, not re-done using the source audio, and therefore can also cause quality loss.

If THAT doesn't even help, try using lossless audio source in combination with my tips. Converting from lossy to lossy is not really something that should be done, especially since older lossy formats like MP3 were designed specifically for converting from lossless.

The issue was with the song, because the second song I Nightcored went smoothly.

There's also the "set rate" setting that darned near nobody knows (or cares) about that technically allows for lossless Nightcore edits. The difference is that instead of resampling during the encoding process, you resample at playback, and therefore can preserve more of the waveform if 96khz playback is supported.

Make sure that the Vocals and the Beat will be balanced, you do not want to make the kick of the bass overpower the Vocals. :D

You can't remove the vocal of a song without making it sound pretty bad. You should google it and if you're lucky you can get a less shitty file, but won't get a perfect one at all.

youtube accepts pretty much anything and will convert it, send them something of good quality and they will convert it to something of good quality
